Background:
Helmsley Primary was built in 1980 to replace the Church of England and Methodist primary schools which had previously served Helmsley. The school is housed in a stone clad building which is in keeping with local architecture, together with two temporary classrooms. Over the past five years the school has 'improved its academic results considerably whilst maintaining a broad and balanced curriculum'. In addition to this, it offers a 'wide range' of extra-curricular activities including art, drama, netball, football, chess and cycling proficiency. The school participates in the National Trust's Guardianship of Rievaulx Terraces which provides children with the opportunity to manage a woodland area. The school has linked this with an 'extensive' environmental project of its own and has now established a woodland walk, pond, bog garden and meadow area around the perimeter of the school field. Co-opted representatives of the National Trust and Forestry Enterprise are governors at the school.
