Background:
Founded September 1966; converted from St Mary's College, a boys' Roman Catholic Grammar, which moved to new building; mainly 1920s single-storey box classrooms. Recent buildng work has created some open-plan space for some years. Nursery opened in 1989; separate infant and junior playgrounds. Artists in residence have worked with pupils to enhance outdoor classroom: gardens, maze, sculpture, mosaics, wall paintings. Ramps throughout the school for disabled access. No playing fields; two miles from town centre. Mixed properties locally, majority owner-occupied. School used by local operatic and theatre groups, also Brownies, main political party meetings, ballet classes. Extra-curricular success with school choir; 10 first places in musical festivals in 1990s. Sport includes girls' football team (Middlesbrough diocese champions, boys came second). School football team were Middlesbrough Cup winners at Riverside Stadium. Music tuition includes violin, cello, guitar and keyboards. Active parent-teacher association organises social and educational events. Fundraising includes collections for local and national charities. Over-subscribed. Beacon status (2000).
