Background:

Galley Hill Primary School was built in 1974 in a generous and pleasant ground on Southwestern edge of Guisborough, close to boundary of North York Moors National Park. The school was extended in 1975 and 1981, designed to be flexible and contains several large and small teacher areas, two well-resourced libraries and the 26-place nursery unit was opened in 1995. Following the recent development in ICT and physical education, the school is now involved in the national interactive whiteboard project; whiteboards are in every classroom and all teaching staff use laptops. There is a wide range of extra-curricular activities for children including art and craft, hockey, netball, rounders, football, board game and gym club. The school is over-subscribed. Newly-formed school council and eco-committee give children a greater voice and closer links are being established with local community. Achievements in recent years include Activemark (2003); Schools Curriculum Award (2001); DfES achievement award (2003); Leading Aspect Award ICT (2005); Basic Skills Quality Mark (2005) and Artsmark Silver (2006).
