Background:
School named after late Dr Ralph Butterfield, a local man and chairman of the old North Riding Education Committee who became pro-chancellor of York University. The school was opened in 1954; substantially extended in 1984/85 into 11-classroom school. All the children are housed in purpose-built classrooms. Serves the area chiefly in the east of the village centre; opposite the library. Runs own catering, focusing on locally-produced vegetables, fresh ingredients, and increasing range of homemade food. A range of extra-curricular activities are offered, including football, netball, cricket, rugby, instrumental lessons, wind band, and chess club. Supports local and national charities; active parents' association. Holiday club on site. Before-school care, from 8am; after-school, until 6pm. Basic Skills Quality Mark (20002, 2005), Investor in People status (2004), DfEs achievement award (2002, 2003).
