Background:

Originally an endowed school founded in 1785, Richard Taylor became voluntary aided in 1973 when it moved to a new site. It is housed in a modern building and facilities include playing fields and a wildlife area. The school is situated in a socially mixed area in Bilton and there is a 'wide mix of ability'. It has 'high expectations and value is placed on the achievement of all'. It is a 'popular' school and is over subscribed, with an average of 10 pupils applying for every seven places. A new classroom has been built to help reduce class sizes. The school offers a 'broad and balanced' curriculum based on the core subjects of the National Curriculum. It also places a 'heavy emphasis' on personal and social education (PSE). The school offers a range of extra-curricular activities. These include a large choir and a recorder group, both of which have had success at the Harrogate Music Festival. There are football, netball and rounders teams, and the swimming team has won the the local swimming gala. There is 'close contact' with the local church and community, and parents are 'very supportive' of the school. Regular charity fundraising includes support for a college for visually and hearing impaired pupils and MacMillan Cancer Relief. 'Good links' are maintained with local high schools. Richard Taylor has facilities for disabled pupils. Educational visits support all areas of the curriculum and a there is an annual residential trip for older pupils.
