Background:
Founded in 1492 by Peter Toller as Chantry school in Skipton parish church; refounded in 1548 on different site by William Ermysted, Canon Residentiary of St Paul's Cathedral in London; moved to current green and wooded site near centre of the Yorkshire Dales market town in 1876. Original stone buildings augmented over the years, most recently in 1994 when new sports hall opened; other facilities include new £1 million technology block and classrooms added in 2003; also science facilities increased with two additional laboratories, and other laboratories upgraded. Selection procedures identify top 28 per cent of age range; about half of places remain for extra-district applicants, who outnumber supply by ratio of four to one; increased to four-form entry in September 2003. All pupils study French and German in Year 7; Latin compulsory in Years 8 and 9; separate sciences studied to GCSE. Competitive sport includes rugby, cricket, cross-country, and athletics. Specialist science college status. Over-subscribed, with more than two applications per place. Sportsmark (2005).
