Background:

Founded more than 130 years ago, Marton-cum-Grafton is now situated on a 'beautiful, rural' site overlooking open countryside with views of York Minster and White Horse, Kilburn. The school is a mixture of modernised Victorian buildings and 1970 extension and enjoys 'very large' playing fields, including two football pitches, a netball court, a basketball area, a hard play area, and a wildlife, wooded and grass area. The school offers a range of professional sports coaching in football and netball as part of extra-curricular activities. It also has specialised music tuition. More than half the children play a musical instrument and the school produces two concerts or plays per year. French is available for nine to 11 year olds. The school also has a choir and a church club through which the children get invloved in church services. It has 'close' links with the local community and holds regular events such as a Christmas party for the local OAPs, a summer fair and WI meetings. The school is a registered charity and in the last three years its Friends Association has raised more than #5,000 for a new reference library and more than #3,500 to develop the school's playing fields. The children are also encouraged to raise money for other charities. The school roll has increased by 42% in the last three years and in some year groups the school is over-subscribed.
