Background:
Established in 1845, occupies building dating from 1966, with two well-equipped classrooms and a hall; a third classroom housed in separate building; in addition to tarmac playground and grassed areas, children have use of local playing field. A member of the Upper Wharfedale Cluster, seven schools which combine to create opportunities for children to interact with others in their peer group and to act as a forum for teachers. School 'values all aspects of the curriculum and makes positive choices to include a wide range of creative experiences for the children'. Pupils recently took part in exhibition of work centred on a National Gallery project based on Hogarth's work. School had visit from four Christian artists from America, India and South Africa who led a workshop. After-school club held in village hall; after-school activities include country dancing, French, netball, rounders, athletics and disco dancing. Links with Wharfedale Rugby Club; proud of community links and of its fundraising efforts for causes such as Martin House Hospice for Sick Children, Barnardos and children in Eastern Europe and St Lucia. Member of Healthy Schools initiative and supporter of Jump for Heart appeal. Parents play key role in supporting school and have laid paving stones, painted rooms, helped with a wild garden and raised funds for projects such as updated ICT equipment. School aims 'to provide a stimulating environment to enable all pupils to attain high levels of achievement, determined by their individual strengths'.
