Background:

The school founded in 1557 for the sons of the poor by Owen Oglethorpe, Bishop of Carlisle and a native of Newton Kyme, the school merged with Dawson Girls' School at the beginning of the 20th century. After 50 years as a grammar school, it became one of the first bilateral schools following the Second World War, before moving to its current 70-acre parkland site in 1960 and becoming a comprehensive in 1968. In addition to Toulston Lodge, the Dower House of Fairfax family, it occupies modern buildings. Main buildings centre on large assembly hall that can accommodate up to 1,000 people, more than 45 classrooms, 10 science laboratories (five built in 2002), refurbished design technology suite (two new workshops in 2004), specialist bases for art, food and textile technology, music, careers and learning support. Impressive sports facilities include two gymnasiums, seven tennis courts, hockey, soccer, rugby pitches, cricket square, hard-surface athletics track, grounds and adjacent woodlands also allow for cross-country and orienteering. There was a significant building programme since 2001, which include refurbished music department, new sixth-form centre, including study centre, all-day cafeteria, conference room, seminar room and offices. The school has been awarded with National Healthy School Award and Investor in People Status. It also has a Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, largest school-based scheme in North Yorkshire. Partners with school in Mozambique, raising £10,000 to fund improved sanitary facilities for it. The school is a Specialist Business and Enterprise College. The school aims to provide an ambitious, supportive and stimulating environment in which each student is encouraged to develop individual talents in the context of openness, high expectation and the pursuit of excellence.
