Background:

Riverside is located in Tadcaster, a small town within a rural setting, roughly half way between Leeds and York. Originally built in 1967 as a junior school, the infant and junior schools amalgamated in 1987 to form Riverside School. The school is all on one level, and the main building accommodates 10 classrooms, a hall/dining room and administration area, all with good wheelchair access. Four mobile teaching units were added in 1991 to accommodate an increasing school roll, and the school is currently over-subscribed. Riverside has 'very extensive' and 'well cared-for' grounds used for sporting and recreational activities. Riverside's own school sports teams and also community teams like Tadcaster Albion use these weekly. The school offers an 'extensive' range of extra-curricular activities that includes soccer, netball, cricket, badminton, gymnastics, recorder, choir, music composition, campanology, chess, computers and gardening. Of the sports listed, a few are played competitively and soccer, chess and gymnastics are all played at York and District level. There are 'very strong' community links which are an 'important feature of school'. These include the distribution of produce at Harvest Festival and a huge community bonfire and other events on November 5. 'Regular' use is also made of school grounds and buildings for local events. Riverside supports 'at least' one main charity a year plus Children In Need and Red Nose Day. Children select other charities, perhaps in response to a news item or natural disaster, wishing to raise money as a way of doing 'something to help'.
