Background:
The school was opened in 1953 and shares its site with Westfield Infant School. The largest junior school in the City of York, it occupies a 'spacious' two-floor building and offers a large assembly hall with stage, which is also used as a gymnasium, a separate dining room and kitchen and additional classrooms in the grounds. The school is situated two miles from the centre of York, close to the outer ring road, and is set in 13 acres of grounds. The school has 23 extra-curricular activities ranging from sports to musical, drama and artistic clubs. It also achieves 'highly' in sporting activities, regularly competing in winning sports tournaments. Sports include football, netball, rugby, gymnastics, swimming and rounders. All children have swimming lessons for one term each year. The school is 'well known' in the area for its 'wide range' of musical activities, and its latest addition is a nine-piece steel band. The new information technology suite is predicted to have 'some of the best facilities in York'. The school has 'excellent' community links, which are enhanced by the adult community learning room, which runs courses for adults in the area. Children and parents 'regularly' support charitable events and are 'very generous' in terms of local, national or worldwide crises. The school is also part of the Comenius project, and 'regularly' exchanges information with its partner schools in Italy and Sweden. The school also has local industrial links and works with national organisations at a local level. School governors play an 'active and important' part in the life of the school and are 'very supportive'. The 'partnership of everyone in the school contributes to its high quality, friendly, and supportive environment'.
