Background:
Selby High was founded in 1908 as a girls' grammar school, just outside the centre of Selby. It became a mixed grammar in 1968 and a comprehensive in 1979. Part of the school is a Grade II Georgian listed building. Two 'substantial' building programmes have added laboratories and classrooms and, more recently, a sports hall and art, music and technology rooms. There are also 'large' playing fields. The school is over-subscribed and its science results are 'among the best in North Yorkshire'. Separate sciences are taught to a top group of about 20 pupils, many of them girls, and the most able pupils tend to study science at college. More than 80% of pupils continue their education after the age of 16 and mathematics and science are the most popular A-levels for former pupils. An 'extensive range' of extra-curricular activities is offered and the school achieves 'excellent' sporting results in local leagues, with girls winning almost all leagues in hockey and netball. The school is 'traditional, yet forward-looking'.
