Background:
The school was founded in the 1840's and moved to its present location in 1979. It is situated in Brayton at the southern edge of Selby, and serves the town of Selby and the surrounding villages. Set in its own grounds, it offers a football pitch, a wildlife area and two playgrounds. Facilities include eight classrooms, a TV room, a hall, an infant library area and a junior library area which incorporates an information and communications technology (ICT) centre. The school offers a 'broad and balanced' curriculum and aims to 'maintain the distinctive Catholic nature of the school'. It also offers a range of extra-curricular activities including football, netball, rounders and fee-paying musical instrument tuition. During the 1998/99 season the mixed netball team won the Selby and District Netball Rally. The football team had an 'outstanding season', winning the Adidas Predator Trophy for the Selby area and North Yorkshire area, the Sleby and District League and a locally organised Fun Day tournament. The school has 'strong community links', particularly with the church and parish. Older members of the parish have visited the school to talk about their lives, the choir sings at a local senior citizens home at Christmas, and the school holds a harvest service in the local church. The school also supports local and national charities. A small number of pupils have statements of special educational needs (SEN) and specialist SEN support staff are provided by the local education authority.
