Background:

Founded in 1870, the school moved into its present buildings in 1972. It serves the villages of Tockwith, Bilton, Bickerton and Cowthorpe and the surrounding area. Many professional parents have moved into the area and work in York, Harrogate, Leeds or further afield. The school is very aware of the limited cultural diversity in the area and strives to provide children with 'cultural balance' within the curriculum and on educational visits. 'High priority' is also given to promoting self-esteem. The 'delightful' school grounds contain a large field, nature area with pond, wooden play equipment and two tarmac play areas. Pupils enter local competitions in football, netball and swimming. All children can learn the recorder and some also learn woodwind and guitar. There is a small orchestra which performs an annual production. There are 'close links' with the local church and the vicar takes a weekly assembly. Elderly villagers join pupils for lunch once a month. Children are encouraged to raise funds for national and international charities throughout the year, and they learn to save money in the school bank.
